4. Harvey Waterson Boland was born on 19 Feb 1893 in Big Creek, Calhoun County, MS. He married Bertha Rose Talley, daughter of Rev. Jefferson Davis Talley and Martha Emma Etta Edwards, on 26 Feb 1911 in Comanche, Comanche County, TX. He married Eula E. Ragsdale circa 1936 in OK. He married Nora Smith circa 1940 in OK. He married Flora Catherine Smith circa 1946 in OK. He married Bethlene A. Eckman, daughter of (--?--) Eckman and (--?--) Gibson, circa 1948 in CA. He died on 7 Dec 1971 in Jamestown, Tuolumne County, CA, at age 78. He was buried on 14 Dec 1971 in Jamestown Cemetery, Jamestown, Tuolumne County, CA. Harvey's Social Security Application #441-09-7785. It states he was born in Calhoun City, Miss. on 19 Feb. 1893. He was living in Ada, Oklahoma on 24 Nov. 1936. It also shows his father is William Capus Boland. He is listed in Comanche County, TX Marriages, 1856 - 1920, page 12. Harvey is in these censuses: 1900 Calhoun County, MS, ED 10, sheet 14; 1910 Concho County, TX [in household of William C. Bryson], ED 29, sheet 20; 1930 1125 S. 26th St., Oklahoma County, OK, ED 137, sheet 5B - Oklahoma City (married). In the 1900 census Harvey W. is shown to be born in Feb 1893, and a brother of Kelley S. Boland, and they are sons of William C. Boland. The "History of the John Boland Family", page 24, has this phrase "Kelly Boland, a great grandson of Fred Boland." Since Kelly and Harvey are brothers, they have the same father, William C., the same grandfather (who is discussed in the notes for Frederick Boland), and the same great grandfather, Fred Boland. When we find the link between Fred Boland and Kelley S. Boland, we also find the link between Fred and Harvey W. Boland.

5. Bertha Rose Talley was born on 20 Feb 1895 in Omaha, Morris County, TX. She married Harvey Waterson Boland, son of William Capus Boland and Sarah Ellen Gleaton, on 26 Feb 1911 in Comanche, Comanche County, TX. She married Dan Bryant circa 1936 in (OK). She married Dock Febby Maddox, son of (--?--) Maddox and ? (--?--), circa 1946 in (OK). She died on 10 Jun 1983 in Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, OK, at age 88. She was buried on 13 Jun 1983 in Oakwood Cemetery, Wewoka, Seminole County, OK. Census: 1940 [[Miller, Seminole County, OK, ED 67-26, page 10A,[Rosa]- this is not Bertha Rose]].

6. James Robert Lowe was born on 21 Sep 1891 in (Yell County), AR. He married Ora Pearl Powers, daughter of James Franklin Powers and Mary Amanda Hightower, on 6 Oct 1912 in (Yell County), AR. He died on 29 Nov 1936 in Holdenville, Hughes County, OK, at age 45. He was buried on 2 Dec 1936 in Moores Hill Cemetery, Centerville, Yell County, AR. Occuptaion: Barber and Farmer. Census: 1920 Pittsburg County, OK, ED 217, sheet 3. He died of a brain tumor. This is his obituary: Bethel Farmer Tumor Victim. Brain tumor Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock proved fatal to J.R. Lowe prominent Bethel farmer and member of the Bethel school board. Mr. Lowe died at the family home, eight miles north of Holdenville, after having been ill for the past year. He was 45 years of age and had been in critical condition for the past several weeks. Relatives said hope had been abandoned several weeks ago. The victim was prominent in county farming circles and had served in Bethel community affairs for a number of years. He was a member of the Bethel school board. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at the Bethel school at 10:30 o'clock with the Hudson Funeral home in charge. Burial will be either in Holdenville or Hilltop cemetery with the Rev. C.C. Johnson, Holdenville Nazarene minister officiating. Besides his widow, Mr. Lowe is survived by three sons, Orvel and Winfred of Bethel and Glendon of a New Mexico CCC camp; three daughters, Nellie, Ora Lee and Ellen, all of the home address; and one sister, Mrs. J.D. Babb of Holdenville; and two brothers, Madison Lowe of Seminole and John Lowe of Eddy, Oklahoma. All will attend last rites.

7. Ora Pearl Powers was born on 23 Feb 1896 in Gravelly, Yell County, AR. She married James Robert Lowe, son of Henry Madison Lowe and Martha Janey Lucinda Bell, on 6 Oct 1912 in (Yell County), AR. She died on 8 Mar 1992 in Wewoka, Seminole County, OK, at age 96. She was buried on 11 Mar 1992 in Oakwood Cemetery, Wewoka, Seminole County, OK. Census: 1940 Yeager, Hughes County, OK, ED 32-33A, page 6A.

--- 4th Generation ---

8. William Capus Boland was also known as Billy Capers. He was born on 1 Mar 1859 in Big Creek, Calhoun County, MS. He married Sarah Ellen Gleaton, daughter of Rufus Thomas Gleaton and Martha L. Sullivan, on 31 Oct 1880 in Big Creek, Calhoun County, MS. He died on 6 Nov 1929 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, OK, at age 70. He was buried on 7 Nov 1929 in 35-31-55.9N 97-32-13.8W, Rose Hill Cemetery, Section 4, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, OK. William's occupation was a farmer. He was born in Big Creek, MS, moved to Comanche, TX about 1903, to Konawa, OK about 1913, and then to Oklahoma City, OK. William is in these censuses: (should be in 1860 and 1870 Calhoun County, MS); 1880 Calhoun County, MS [in household of Thomas Beadles], ED 13, sheet 17; 1900 Calhoun County, MS, ED 10, sheet 14; 1910 Comanche County, TX, ED 15, sheet 13; 1920 Konawa, Seminole County, OK, ED 245, sheet 4. Two of the censuses have "William C." One has "W.C." The 1910 census has "William Cox Boland". I don't know where "Cox" comes from. I have not found William in the 1860 census with his parents or the 1870 census with his mother, name unknown. In the 1860 census there is a William in the household of James and Martha Boland. But the names and dates do not match our family--James Boland 36 SC, Martha 21 MS, Mary 4 MS, William 3/12 MS. The 1900 Calhoun County, MS census, ED 10, sheet 14 names seven children of William C. and Sallie E. Boland, two of which are Kelley S. and Hearvy (Harvey) W. Boland. (In the 1900 census - Bolland). Harvey's Social Security application shows his father is "William Capus Boland". The 1910 Calhoun County, MS census, ED 17, sheet 15, has Kelley S. Boland 23, Susie B. 22, Frank J. 3, William L. 2, and David L. 9/12. So we can see that one of William C.'s grandsons is Frank Boland. In a letter to "Aunt Rose" on 29 May 1978 Frank refers to "Grandpa Billy". So the census has William C., and the letter has Billy for the same person. The obituary for William C. Boland is shown below. It gives a hint at who his parents are. It states that he had a sister named Mrs. Georgia Spears still living in Big Creek, MS (1929). Georgia Ann Boland married John Clark Spears in 1874 and lived in Big Creek until her death in 1937. The "History of the John Boland Family" on page 9, says "Wesley married a Miss Denley. They were the parents of three children: Billy Capers, Georgia Ann, and Maggie." The brother of Georgia Ann was Billy Capers in the book, and W. C. in his obituary. So we have five names for the same person: W.C., William Capus, William C., Billy, and Billy Capers. In the "Daily Oklahoman", page 20 on Nov. 7, 1929: "Funeral services for W.C. Boland, 73 years old, who passed away Wednesday morning, will be conducted at Marshall & Harper's funeral home, 3009 Paseo, Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock by Rev. Forney Hutchinson. He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. W.M. Smith, Mrs. Charles Schrug and Mrs. O.M. Dutton, all of Oklahoma City: Mrs. R. L. Irby of Dennison, Texas and Stella Brock of Hobart, Okla. and three sons, C.W. Boland of Earlsboro, Okla., L.S and H.W. Boland, both of Wewoka, Okla., one sister, Mrs. Georga Spears and one sister-in-law, Mrs. K.S. Boland, both of Big Creek, Miss. Burial in Rose Hill cemetery." (note: Mrs. K.S. Boland is actually his daughter-in-law.).

9. Sarah Ellen Gleaton was born on 18 Jun 1860 in Gordon, Henry County, AL. She married William Capus Boland, son of Joseph Wesley Boland and Margaret Denley, on 31 Oct 1880 in Big Creek, Calhoun County, MS. She died on 5 Sep 1925 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, OK, at age 65. She was buried on 7 Sep 1925 in 35-31-55.9N 97-32-13.8W, Rose Hill Cemetery, Section 4, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, OK. Sarah is in these censuses: (should be in 1870 and 1880 Elmore County, AL);1900 Calhoun County, MS, ED 10, sheet 14; 1910 Comanche County, TX, ED 15, sheet 13; 1920 Konawa, Seminole County, OK, ED 245, sheet 4. In her son Harvey W. Boland's Social Security Application, "Sallie Gleaton" is listed as his mother. Her obituary in the "Daily Oklahoman", page 6A, on Sept. 6, 1925: "Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Ellen Boland, 65 years old, who died Saturday morning at a city hospital, will be conducted in Marshall and Harper's Chapel Monday afternoon at 4 o'clock by Rev. Forney Hutchinson. She is survived by her husband, W.C. Boland, and five daughters and four sons. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery.".

10. Rev. Jefferson Davis Talley was born on 24 Mar 1861 in Section, Jackson County, AL. He married Martha Emma Etta Edwards, daughter of Joseph Edwards and Elizabeth Jane Owens, on 8 Jan 1882 in (Larkinsville), Jackson County, AL. He died on 12 Dec 1928 in Omaha, Morris County, TX, at age 67. He was buried in Concord Cemetery, Omaha, Morris County, TX. Marriage certificate shows marriage in Jackson County, AL. Census: 1870 Scottsboro, Jackson County, AL, page 180 (with parents); 1880 Jackson County, AL, ED 125, sheet 277 - shows 2 kinds of disability; 1900 Morris County, TX, ED 97, sheet 10; 1910 Comanche County, TX, ED 15, sheet 13; 1920 Hughes County, OK, ED 79, sheet 4. He and his four brothers moved to Omaha, Morris County, Texas in 1892 or 1893; then to Comanche County, Texas about 1908. He moved to Yeager, Oklahoma about 1913; then to Sasakwa, OK about 1921; then to near Butner, OK about 1926. He died while visiting in Omaha, Texas. He began preaching in 1887 in the Baptist Church in Alabama. He continued preaching in Texas. In Oklahoma he preached in the Missionary Baptist Church. This article was in the Wewoka, Oklahoma newspaper about 1921. "RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE -----J. D. Talley, Wewoka, Ok. I was born in Jackson County, Alabama, March 24, 1861. I have been preaching ever since the third Sunday in August, 1887. I was converted at old Young Church in Marshall County, Alabama, at the age of 18. I had never heard the Gospel of Christ until that day and it was to me as a two-edged sword. It turned every way for cutting. It was then that the Kingdom came unto me. Christ had come into the house of old Satan and given him to understand that he "must get out of Talley." I was so happy that everything around me semed to be praising the good Lord. I felt like I never would see any more trouble, but would praise God the rest of my days. Forty-two years have passed since that time and I have had a mixed cup---sometimes up and sometimes down. I don't feel like it's any good thing that I have done that saved me. It is alone through the goodness and mercy of the good Lord. It is by grace that I am saved through faith and not by works.".

11. Martha Emma Etta Edwards was born on 3 Mar 1865 in Cherokee or Jackson County, AL. She married Rev. Jefferson Davis Talley, son of Henry Hubbard Talley and Charlsey Amanda Southerland, on 8 Jan 1882 in (Larkinsville), Jackson County, AL. She died on 12 Feb 1947 in Wewoka, Seminole County, OK, at age 81. She was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Wewoka, Seminole County, OK. Census: 1870 Jackson County, AL, page 10 or 217 (with parents); 1880 Jackson County, AL, ED 125, sheet 273 (with parents);1900 Morris Co, TX census says March 1865 at ED 97, sheet 10; 1930 Oklahoma City, Oklahoma County, OK, ED 141, sheet 5A; 1940 Wewoka, Seminole County, OK, ED 67-40, page 3A [West Cedar Street]. Talley family Bible says 3 March 1865. In 1880 Jackson County, AL census, ED 125, sheet 273. Birth may be 25 Aug 1865 in Jackson County, AL, according to Jimmy Carl Barker (he has no reference).

12. Henry Madison Lowe was born on 25 Oct 1844 in Blount County, TN. He married Martha Janey Lucinda Bell, daughter of William H. Bell and Ann E(lizabeth?) Foshee, on 15 Nov 1868 in Blount County, AL. He died on 20 Jan 1904 in Yell County, AR, at age 59. He was buried circa 23 Jan 1904 in Moores Hill Cemetery, Centerville, Yell County, AR. Occupation: Farmer. Military: Henry served three times during the Civil War. First, he volunteered on 5 Sep 1861 in the Alabama 25th Infantry, Capt. A.W. Nixon's Company D in Ashville, AL, for the Confederacy. He was in the Battle of Shiloh. It is not clear whether he was wounded and discharged in Jul 1862 in Tupelo, MS, or deserted in Oct 1863 near Stevenson, AL. Second, on 15 Oct 1863 he volunteered for the Union. He served in Company C, Regiment 12 of the Tennessee Cavalry under Capt. J.S. Kirwan and Capt. J.F. Graham from 15 Oct 1863 through 10 April 1864, when he deserted. Third, on 14 Jul 1864 in Larkinsville, AL he volunteered for the Union in Alabama Scouts and Guides in Capt. H.J. Springfield's Co., and served until 22 Nov 1864. In 1892 he applied for a pension for his service, but was denied. In his application on 15 Oct 1863 he stated he was born in Blount County, Tennessee. In March or April 1869 he moved with the William H. Bell family to Arkansas. After a three-year stopover in Mt. Pleasant, Mississippi, they arrived in 1872 in Tina, Arkansas, site of present-day Concord. Census: 1850 Gordon County, GA, page 28 (with parents); 1860 Blount County, AL, page 1114; 1870 Marshall County, MS, page 596; 1880 Independence County, AR, ED 129, sheet 18 (Henry M Low); 1900 Yell County, AR, ED 146, sheet 9. The date of desertion in Oct 1963 is listed as 7 Nov 1863 near Stevenson, AL. Henry M. and Martha L. had thirteen children -- five children who lived to adulthood, and eight other children who died young. This is a list of the eight children who died young. (1) Jeremiah Lowe was born in November 1869 in Mt. Pleasant, Marshall County, MS. He died circa 1873 in (MS or AR). (2) (--?--) Lowe was born circa 1871 in Marshall County, MS. He/she died before 1880. (3) (--?--) Lowe was born circa 1875 in Cleburne County, AR. He/she died before 1880. (4) (--?--) Lowe was born circa 1878 in Cleburne County, AR. He/she died before 1880. 13. Martha Janey Lucinda Bell was also known as Martha J. She was also known as Martha J. Lucendia. She also went by the name of Cindy. She was born in Aug 1847 in Summit, Blount County, AL. She married Henry Madison Lowe, son of Jeremiah Lowe and Mahala Shook, on 15 Nov 1868 in Blount County, AL. She died in Jun 1907 in Yell County, AR, at age 59. She was buried in Jun 1907 in Moores Hill Cemetery, Centerville, Yell County, AR.

14. James Franklin Powers was born on 27 Aug 1859 in College Mound, Macon County, MO. He married Mary Amanda Hightower, daughter of William Franklin Hightower and Hester Ann King, on 9 Nov 1889 in Johnson County, AR. He died on 16 Nov 1916 in Yell County, AR, at age 57. --- 5th Generation ---

16. Joseph Wesley Boland was born in 1831 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He married Margaret Denley, daughter of William Denley and Margaret M. Johnson, circa 1854 in MS. He died on 2 Apr 1863 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN. He was buried circa 4 Apr 1863 in The Confederate Cemetery, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN. Joseph W. is in the 1850 Lexington County, SC census, page 376, as the son of Frederick Boland. I have not found Joseph W., or Wesley, in the 1860 census. The "History of the John Boland Family", page 9, states that "Uncle Fred and Aunt Dollie became the parents of nine children, five sons and four daughters: Uriah, Wesley, Sarah Ann, Louise, William, Jim, Catherine, George, and Henrietta." In the 1850 census for Lexington County, SC, page 376, Frederick Boland is shown with eight of his children, five boys and three girls. The fourth girl Henrietta was yet to be born. The family is listed this way: The entries are all Boland, and all born in SC: Frederick 36, Anna P. 42, Joseph W. 19, Sarah L. 16, Uriah A. 14, Louisa T. 12, William G. 11, Christina C. 7, James C. 5, and George T. 2. Compare the five boys in the book and in the census. Uriah = Uriah A., William = William G., Jim = James C., George = George T. That leaves only one other son. Wesley = Joseph W. Wesley in the book = Joseph W. in the census. Thus we have "Joseph Wesley Boland", the oldest son of Frederick and Anna Boland. The book on page 9, says "Wesley married a Miss Denley. They were the parents of three children: Billy Capers, Georgia Ann, and Maggie. Wesley went off to fight in the Confederate Army, and was never heard from again." Joseph Wesley served the Confederacy, in the 29th Mississippi Infantry, Company F, under Colonel Edward C. Walthall. He enlisted on 3 Apr 1862 at Grenada (about 25 miles west of Big Creek); it was in Yalabosha or Grenada County, Mississippi. He is listed in "Roster of Confederate Soldiers" as "J.W. Boland, 29th Infantry, Company F of Mississippi". He probably fought in the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. About March 1863 he became sick, taken to Ferard Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. He died in the hospital of pneumonia on 2 April 1863. He was buried in the Chattanooga Confederate Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN. His name is J.W. Boland in his enlistment. The name on his gravestone is J.W. Boland. His name may be spelled Bowland. The gravestone is a plack with many names for Mississippi soldiers on it. It has "Jno W Boland"; I think that is a mistake, because his enlistment has "J.W. Boland". Joseph Wesley's only son was Billy Capers. For a discussion of Billy Capers, see the notes for William Capers (Capus) Boland.

17. Margaret Denley was born in 1833 in Hinds or Yalobusha County, MS. She married Joseph Wesley Boland, son of Frederick Boland and Anna Dorithy Bickley, circa 1854 in MS. Census: 1850 Yalobusha County, MS, page 446B (with parents); 1860 not found. She is mentioned in the book "History of the John Boland Family". The book on page 9, says "Wesley married a Miss Denley.".

18. Rufus Thomas Gleaton was born on 18 Jan 1832 in Orangeburg County, SC. He married Martha L. Sullivan, daughter of Jeremiah Sullivan and Nancy Deason, on 30 Dec 1855 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, AL. He died on 1 Apr 1891 in Crystal River, Citrus County, FL, at age 59. Tallassee was previously in Tallapoosa County. Census: 1850 Tallapoosa County, AL, page 1 - with parents; 1860 Tallapoosa County, Alabama, page 211. Rufus patented 40 acres of land on 1 Nov 1858 in Henry County, Alabama--NWNE Sec 12, Twp 4 N, Range 28 E.. Served in Civil War while in Alabama. 1880 Reeltown, Tallapoosa County, AL, ED 148, page 441 (B.R. Gleaton is listed as 1 year old).

19. Martha L. Sullivan was born on 28 Jun 1839 in Montgomery County, AL. She married Rufus Thomas Gleaton, son of Levi Columbus Gleaton and Ann Mariah Hutto, on 30 Dec 1855 in Montgomery, Montgomery County, AL. She died on 26 Jun 1916 in Crystal River, Citrus County, FL, at age 76. Census: 1900 Ozello, Citrus County, FL, ED 26, page 14A.

20. Henry Hubbard Talley was born on 6 Oct 1801 in York District, SC. He married Mary Lacy Webb on 14 Dec 1820 in (York District, SC). He married Charlsey Amanda Southerland, daughter of Adam Southerland and Sarah (--?--), on 5 Sep 1858 in Marshall County, AL. He died on 19 Dec 1876 in Section, Jackson County, AL, at age 75. He was buried in Farm near Haigwood Cemetery, Section, Jackson County, AL. Henry's occupation was Shoemaker. He was deaf. Many family members think he was part Cherokee. Census: 1830 Newton County, GA, page 27 - 210001-11001 (30-40 years old); 1840 Stewart County, GA, page 143 - 112101-110101 (30-40 years old); 1850 Murray County, GA, page 163 (49 years old); 1860 Jackson County, AL, page 436 (58 years old); 1870 Scottsboro, Jackson County, AL, page 180 (69 years old). Myrtle Talley-Belyeu says his name is Patrick Henry Hubbard Talley. Land record shows 160.46 acres of property in Jackson County, AL. It is the northeast quarter of section 22 in township six south of range six east of Huntsville Meridian. A marker has been placed in Haigwood Cemetery, with a date of death as 1861, which is an erroneous date. He died in 1876. Henry was not buried in the cemetery, but on his farm near the cemetery. He raised his first family in Georgia. After his wife Mary died in 1855, he moved to Alabama. After three years he and Charlsey married, and raised their family in Alabama.

21. Charlsey Amanda Southerland was born on 12 Mar 1828 in AL. She married W. D. Johnson circa 1847 in AL. She married Henry Hubbard Talley, son of Henry Talley and Edith Hubbard, on 5 Sep 1858 in Marshall County, AL. She died on 12 Jan 1900 in Section, Jackson County, AL, at age 71. She was buried in Haigwood Cemetery, Section, Jackson County, AL. Census: [If Adam is her father, she is in 1830 St. Clair, AL; 1840 Marshall County, AL]. 1850 Union Twp, White County, AR, page 444 - Charilla - born in AL; 1860 Jackson County, AL, page 436 - age 32, born in AL; 1870 Scottsboro, Jackson County, AL, page 180 - age 42, born in AL; 1880 Jackson County, AL, ED 125, sheet 277 - age 50, born in AR. In the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses for Jeff D.Talley, his mother was born in AR. On censuses of her other children, they have AL. Tombstone shows she was born 12 Mar 1827. The names "Charlsey" and "Johnson" come from the 1860 census. Myrtle Talley Belyeu, a granddaughter of Charlsey and Henry Hubbard Talley has "Amanda" as Charlsey's middle name. I think it was Bertha Rose Talley Boland who had "Wilburn" as part of Charlsey's name. Charlsey A. Southerland was born in northeastern Alabama which was earlier in Cherokee territory; so it’s possible that her mother was Cherokee, and that would make Charlsey 1/2 Cherokee. In 1847 Charlsey married W. D. Johnson in Alabama. They had James Johnson in 1848 in Alabama. W. D. and Charlsey moved to White County, Arkansas in 1849 or 1850. They are in the 1850 White County, Arkansas census. The census shows W. D. was born in 1828 in Georgia, and Charlsey and James were born in Alabama. Charlsey’s name is spelled Charilla. The pronunciation by the family and the understanding of the census taker were probably not the best. W. D. and Charlsey A. Johnson had Adam J. in Nov 1850 in Arkansas. After several years they returned to Alabama. About 1855 W.D. died, and made Charlsey a widow. Charlsey met Henry Hubbard Talley, and married him in 1858 in Jackson County, Alabama. They lived near the Tennessee River in the Haigwood and Section area of Jackson County, Alabama the rest of their lives. The location was the northeast ¼ part of section 22, township 6 south, range 6 east of Huntsville Meridian. They had seven children. Henry Hubbard Talley died in 1876, leaving Charlsey a widow. She is in the 1880 Jackson County, Alabama census. Charlsey died on 12 Jan 1900 in Jackson County, Alabama. In 1880 next to Charlsey’s household is Adam and Susan Johnson, and their children. He and his family are also in the 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 Jackson County, Alabama censuses. W.D. and Charlsey Johnson’s first son James is listed in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. No middle name or initial is given. I don't know anything about James after the 1860 census.

22. Joseph Edwards was born circa 1820 in SC. He married Elizabeth Jane Owens, daughter of (?) Owens and (?) (--?--), on 30 Jan 1845 in Cherokee County, GA. He died circa 1875 in Jackson County, AL. 24. Jeremiah Lowe was born in 1800 in SC or NC. He married Sally Russell on 8 Jul 1819 in Blount County, TN. He married Mahala Shook, daughter of John Shook and Catherine Teffeteller, circa 1843 in Blount County, TN. He died in 1872 in Blount County, AL. He was buried in Fosters Chapel Cemetery, Blount County, AL. Occupations: Farmer & wagon maker. Census: 1840 Blount County, TN, page 109 - Jerah Lowe - 000201-0020001 age 30-40, with two boys (1820-1825) and two girls (1825-1830); 1850 Gordon County, GA, page 28; 1860 Blount County, AL, page 891; 1870 Blount County, AL, page 301. The location of birth listed by himself 1850 SC, 1860 NC, 1870 SC; and his children in the 1880-1920 census shows (Henry M.) TN, TN; (Francis M.) NC, ?, ?, NC; (Jefferson L.) SC, ?, TN; (Robert L.) SC, ?, ?, NC ; (Philistia A.) NC. In the 1860 census for Jeremiah the location is suspect because everyone in the family are listed as NC. That leaves 4 for SC, 4 for NC, and 3 for TN. Jeremiah himself has 2 of those for SC. I believe Jeremiah was born is SC. Perhaps he grew up in NC.

25. Mahala Shook was also known as Mahaley. She was born circa 1806 in NC. She married James Shannon McCauley on 23 Feb 1833 in Blount County, TN. She married Jeremiah Lowe circa 1843 in Blount County, TN. She died in 1884 in Blount County, AL. She was buried in Fosters Chapel Cemetery- probably, It is in Blount County, AL. Census: 1840 Blount County, TN, page 127; 1850 Gordon County, GA, page 28; 1860 Blount County, AL, page 891; 1870 Blount County, AL, page 323; 1880 Blount County, AL, ED 5, sheet 17. The 1840 census shows she had two sons 5-10 years old (1830-1835) and one son 0-5 years old (1835-1840). Mr. McCauley is not shown. Her age in the censuses 1840 - 30-40; 1850 - 43; 1860 - 51; 1870 - 62; 1880 - 67. Mahala's background is German; all four of her grandparents were German - assuming that John Shook and Katherine Teffteller are her parents. Mahala first married James McCauley (from TN State Marriages) and had three or four sons- James [1833], William [1836], John [1837], and probably Harrison [1840]. Harrison Cyrus McCauley was born in 1840 in Blount County, he is in the 1850 census in the household of Jeremiah Lowe. Harrison co-signed Henry M. Lowe's marriage certificate in 1868. Mahala's second marriage was to Jeremiah Lowe about 1843. On Francis Marion Lowe's death certificate in the part where it asks for the decd mother's maiden name it says MAHALEY SHOOK. Fosters Chapel Cemetery is 3 miles east of Oneonta, AL on US 231; then south for 5 miles. Also, it is 10 miles west of Interstate 59, then 5 miles south. It's location is at 335319N and 862420W. Mahala's parents are mentioned as John Shook and Catherine Teffeteller in email from Melba Lowe on 22 Feb 2005. From the file of Melba Lowe at rootsweb.com: "Susan's gdaughter interviewed in her old age and confirmed to ggranddaughter of Mahala, Inez McCauley Adams, that Susan and Mahala were sisters. She advised her parents were John Shook and Catherine Teffeteller. Susan is 40 in the 1850 Blount Co, TN census. 1880 Blount Co, TN, Susanna gives her & parents POB as NC.".

26. William H. Bell was born circa 1820 in AL. He married Ann E(lizabeth?) Foshee, daughter of ? Fouchet\Foshee and ? (--?--), on 22 May 1842 in Shelby County, AL. He died in Feb 1892 in Concord, Cleburne County, AR. He was buried in Concord Cemetery, Concord, Cleburne County, AR. Occupations: Farmer, leather tanner, and shoe cobbler. He was of Irish descent. His middle initial is "H.", which may be for Hampton. Some people think his middle name is Zachariah. However, in all instances of legal record, his middle initial is shown to be "H". Census: 1850 Subdivision 18, Blount County, AL, page 115; 1860 Blount County, AL, page 1110; 1870 Marshall County, MS, page 631; 1880 Independence County, AR, ED 129, sheet 19. In 1850 no middle initial is shown; in the others it is "H.". In each one of the censuses he states that he was born in Alabama. He applied for a land patent before the 1850 census. But it was not recorded until 1858. On 1 Mar 1858 he patented 320 acres of land in eastern Blount County, Alabama in Township 12S, Range 2E, and Section 36. The land patent and his marriage certificate shows his middle initial is "H." The date of death was once thought to be 12 May 1890. In Arkansas the deed assigning land from William Bell's children to Mary L. Harbin includes this phrase, "we being the lawful heirs of W.H. Bell, deceased," was signed on Feb. 26, 1892. According to Joe Vincent, there were other deeds assigned to the other children of William Bell. If these were assigned near the time of the death of William H. Bell, then his date of death would be about Feb. 1892. In March or April 1869, about one month after his oldest son was murdered, he and his family moved to Arkansas. On the way they lived in Mt. Pleasant, Mississippi for three years to replenish their supplies. In 1872 they arrived in Tina, Arkansas, where present-day Concord is. From "Concord Was My Home" by Elizabeth Brock-Light in the "Cleburne County Historical Journal, Fall 1979" about the William H. Bell family: "They left Alabama heartbroken at the loss of their son, John, who was killed by bushwhackers in the Civil War. These same bushwhackers had ravaged their farm and home, taking everything they could find of any value, leaving the family almost destitute. They left Alabama actually in fear for the lives of the men in the family. " Julia C. Helms has written a four-page story of the exodus as told by Susan Francis Bell-Long. Julia has also written a six-page story as told by Mayme Della Long-Jordan. Zelda Lee Harbin-Hunter has written a one-page story as told by Mary Louisa Bell-Harbin. These four stories tell of hasty preparation and an exhausting journey before finally reaching Arkansas. Another story told by Ora Bell-Cooper about Susan and James Owen Bell was in the "Arkansas Democrat", Sunday, 8 Feb 1976. They were confronted by five robbers one night on the trip; but they escaped that situation without any harm to themselves or their property.

27. Ann E(lizabeth?) Foshee was also known as Fouchet. She was also known as Forshee. She was born on 8 Mar 1821 in NC. She married William H. Bell, son of (--?--) Bell and ? (--?--), on 22 May 1842 in Shelby County, AL. She died in Feb 1891 in Concord, Cleburne County, AR, at age 69. She was buried in Concord Cemetery, Concord, Cleburne County, AR. Ann's father was probably from France; her mother may be a Cherokee. In each census from 1850 through 1880, it states she was born in NC. The date of birth of 08 Mar 1821 is from Velma Foshee (1990), James Hamilton (1995) and Joe Vincent (1999). Her marriage certificate states her name as "Anna Forshee". Marlin Ellis wrote Julia C. Helms and said he and Katy Bishop were going through an old trunk that had belonged to Nancy Bell Ellis. They found a pair of reading glasses wrapped in a piece of paper on which was written "Ann Fouchet Bell, died Feb. 1891.".

28. Joseph Allen Powers was born on 30 Sep 1821 in IL or KY or TN. He married Mahala Jane Teter, daughter of Isaac Teter Sr. and Mary Magdeline Conrad, on 22 Aug 1844 in College Mound, Macon County, MO. He died on 13 Apr 1860 in College Mound, Macon County, MO, at age 38. He was buried in Teter Cemetery, College Mound, Macon County, MO. Occupation: Farmer. I have not been able to find him in the 1850 Macon Co, MO census. Joseph patented 40 acres of land on 1 Jul 1848 in Macon County, Missouri. He patented 40 more acres on 15 Apr 1853. Census records of his children show several states for his birthplace. Of 24 entries, Illinois is mentioned 7 times, Kentucky 6, Tennessee 5, Indiana 2, and Missouri 2, and Unknown 2. He could have been born in Illinois, Kentucky, or Tennessee. Illinois and Kentucky have a common border, and Tennessee is only forty miles away from Illinois. A death certificate for his son John lists Dublin, Ireland as his father's birthplace.

29. Mahala Jane Teter was born on 9 Nov 1826 in Timber Ridge, Pendleton County, WV. She married Joseph Allen Powers on 22 Aug 1844 in College Mound, Macon County, MO. She died circa 12 Mar 1922 in College Mound, Macon County, MO. She was buried in Teter Cemetery, College Mound, Macon County, MO. Death date may be 10 or 14 Mar 1922. He married Hester Ann King, daughter of Dr. James Preston King and Rebecca May, on 5 Dec 1866 in Clarksville, Johnson County, AR. He died on 14 Jun 1911 in Clarksville, Johnson County, AR, at age 71. He was buried circa 17 Jun 1911 in Hays Chapel Cemetery, Clarksville, Johnson County, AR. Occupation: Farmer. William patented 40 acres of land on 30 Nov 1889 in Johnson County, Arkansas. Census: 1870 Johnson County, AR, page 71; 1880 Johnson County, AR, ED 93, page 348B; 1900 Galley Rock Township, Yell County, AR, ED 147, page 7A.

31. Hester Ann King was born on 26 Feb 1841 in Clarksville, Johnson County, AR. She married William Franklin Hightower, son of John W. Hightower and Margaret Hester, on 5 Dec 1866 in Clarksville, Johnson County, AR. She died on 5 Sep 1917 in Johnson County, AR, at age 76. She was buried circa 8 Sep 1917 in Hays Chapel Cemetery, Clarksville, Johnson County, AR.

32. Frederick Boland was born on 29 Mar 1811 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He married Anna Dorithy Bickley, daughter of Thomas Uriah Bickley and Catherine Caughman, circa 1830 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He died circa 1866 in Calhoun County, MS. He was buried in MS. Fred is in these censuses: 1840 Lexington County, SC, page 80; 1850 Lexington County, SC, page 376; and 1860 Calhoun County, MS, page 583. In 1840 Fred is 20-30. In 1850 he is 36. In 1860 he is 49. Many references to his birthdate point to 1811. The "History of the John Boland Family", page 9, says it was the early part of 1811. All of the children of Abraham and Eve are at least 24 months apart. From William (1809) to Joseph (1811) is 26 months. From Joseph (1811) to John Adam (1813) is 24 months. Since his brother Joseph was born on 29 March 1811, wouldn't that make Fred and Joseph twins? We find the parents of Fred Boland in the "History of the John Boland Family" on page 8. It discusses the family of Abraham and Eve C. Boland. It says "Of this union there were born nine sons and one daughter: William, Fred, John Adam, Levi, Catherine (Katie), Mark, Joseph, Walter, Middleton, and Ozro." In the "History of the John Boland Family" on page 24, we find this phrase: "Kelly Boland, a great grandson of Fred Boland". Two connecting links are necessary to make a complete chain of generations. In the book those two links are not listed in one place. So we must rely on statements on page 9 and page 24. There is not a direct connection shown in the census record, so we must rely on the 1850 and the 1900 U.S. censuses. The fourth girl Henrietta was yet to be born; she is listed in the 1860 census. The family is listed this way: The entries are all Boland, and all born in SC: Frederick 36, Anna D. 42, Joseph W. 19, Sarah L. 16, Uriah A. 14, Louisa T. 12, William G. 11, Christina C. 7, James C. 5, and George T. 2. Compare the five boys in the book and in the census. Uriah = Uriah A., William = William G., Jim = James C., George = George T. That leaves only one other son. Wesley = Joseph W. Wesley in the book = Joseph W. in the census. Thus we have "Joseph Wesley Boland", the oldest son of Frederick. One of these five boys is the grandfather of Kelly Boland. In the 1900 census we find that William C. is the father of Kelley S. Boland. So Kelley's father is William C. His grandfather is either Uriah A., William G., James C., George T., or Joseph Wesley. Let's look at the seven grandsons of Fred. (1) Uriah married, but had no children, page 9. (2) William's sons were William Bradford and Edward, page 10. (3) Jim never married, so he didn't have any sons, page 11. (4) George's sons were James W., Jacob, John B., and Fred, page 11. (5) Wesley's son was Billy Capers, page 9. So Fred had a total of seven grandsons. Does any of them match Kelley's father, who was William C., aka as William Capers (Capus), or Billy? There is a William Bradford and a Billy Capers. The middle initial of "C" is the deciding factor. It is Billy Capers. So Billy Capers is William Capers, who is Kelley's father; and Joseph Wesley Boland is his grandfather. Now we have connected four generations of Bolands. Fred Boland; Joseph Wesley, his son; William Capers (Capus), his grandson, and finally Kelley S. Boland, his great grandson.

33. Anna Dorithy Bickley also went by the name of Dollie. She was born in 1808 in SC. She married Frederick Boland, son of Abraham Boland and Eve Christine Sease, circa 1830 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. She died after 1880 in MS. She was buried in MS. Census: 1840 Lexington County, SC, page 80; 1850 Lexington County, SC, page 376 - Anna D.; 1860 Calhoun County, MS, page 583 - Dority;1870 Calhoun County, MS, page 426 - Ann as head of house, and 3 children; 1880 Calhoun County, MS, ED 13, sheet 11 - Anna D. as head of house, 3 children and 1 great granddaughter Nettie, age 5. I think her name should be written "Anna Dorothy".

34. William Denley was born on 6 Aug 1796 in MS Territory, AL. He married Margaret M. Johnson, daughter of Minor Winn Smith Johnson and Hannah (--?--), circa 1820 in MS. He died on 9 Jan 1854 in Calhoun County, MS, at age 57. He was buried in Denley Cemetery, Calhoun County, MS. Census: 1820 Jackson County, MS, page 45 -- 000100-10100 (18-26); 1830 Hinds County, MS, page 203 -- 110011... -21101... (30-40); 1840 Yalobusha Co, MS, page 285, 1211001...-111201 (40-50); and 1850 Yalobusha County, MS, page 446B (52 years old). In 1850 A. B. Denley, a son of William, may be listed as 16 years old.

35. Margaret M. Johnson was born in 1802 in GA. She married William Denley, son of James Denley Jr. and Susan Brewer, circa 1820 in MS. She died after 1870. Census: 1840 Yalobusha Co, MS, page 285; and 1850 Yalobusha County, MS, page 446B; 1860 Big Creek, Calhoun County, MS, page 608; 1870 Big Creek, Calhoun County, MS, page 409 (living with Mary E. and John Munger).

36. Levi Columbus Gleaton was also known as Levy. He was born on 26 Jan 1803 in Orangeburg County, SC. He married Ann Mariah Hutto, daughter of Isaac Hutto and Sarah (--?--), in 1827 in Orangeburg County, SC. He died in 1866 in Tallassee, Elmore County, AL. Census: 1830 Orangeburg County, SC, page 41; 1840 Orangeburg County, SC, page 291; 1850 Tallapoosa County, AL, page 1; 1860 Tallapoosa County, AL, page 211. Moved to Alabama in 1843.

37. Ann Mariah Hutto was born on 28 Dec 1805 in SC. She married Levi Columbus Gleaton, son of Thomas Gleaton Sr. and Kiziah Bolin, in 1827 in Orangeburg County, SC. She died in 1888 in AL or MS. Census: 1870 Reeltown, Tallapoosa County, AL, page 138.

38. Jeremiah Sullivan was born in 1812 in Cork County, Ireland. He married Nancy Deason circa 1838. He died circa 1878 in Carthage, Leake County, MS. Census: 1840 Montgomery County, AL, page 126; 1860 Eastern Division, Fayette County, AL, page 370; 1870 Carthage, Leake County, MS, page 266; 1880 (Nancy is widowed).

39. Nancy Deason was born in 1820 in AL. She married Jeremiah Sullivan circa 1838. She died in Carthage, Leake County, MS. Census: 1880 Carthage, Leake County, MS, ED 49, page 351 (widowed). Nancy's father may be Joseph Deason.

40. Henry Talley was born in 1760 in Cumberland County, VA. He married Edith Hubbard, daughter of (Matthew?) Hubbard, on 1 Dec 1795 in York District, SC. He died on 4 Jun 1836 in Newton County, GA. He was buried in (Newton/Rockdale County?), GA. Occupations: Carpenter and Farmer. Census: 1800 York District, SC, page 970 - 20011-10100; 1810 York District, SC, page 275 - 10101-31010; 1820 York District, SC, page 157 - 200101-22010; 1830 Newton County, GA, page 19 - 0111000001-00200001. Military: Revolutionary War. Henry served three tours of duty lasting twenty months as a private. He first joined on 1 Sep 1780 in Chesterfield County, VA. He is described as age 20, 5' 6" in size, a carpenter by trade, born in Virginia and with black hair, fair complexion, and hazel eyes. After peace was restored, he lived near Richmond, VA. Then he moved to Mecklenburg Co, NC; later to York Co, SC. Finally in 1821-1822 he moved to Newton County, GA. His birthdate is usually shown as 1760. This is the reason: In the pension application Edith Talley made for Henry, she was not completely sure of his birthdate. But she said he was 20 years old at the Battle of Camden (Aug 1780). She also said he was born in 1760. A family Bible in the William Talley (son of Henry) family states the birthdate was 30 Oct 1762. That date still needs research before complete confirmation. His will was signed on 19 April 1831 and probated in Newton County, GA on 12 Dec 1836. Nine children are listed: William, Nathan, Elizabeth, Henry H., Lucy (McWaters), Eliza (Hinton), Mariah (Farmer), Sarah (Clark), and George W. J.C. Barker wrote in 1990, "The whereabouts of the graves of Henry and Edith Talley are unknown. It is believed they were buried at the Church of Christ at Salem. It is a Baptist Church which stands on the original site near Hightower Trail and then Newton, now Rockdale County. It is about 6 miles northeast of Conyers, Georgia on Highway 138. Records of the Church in a 1982 document list the memebership of Edith Talley Hopkins and other members of the family as late as 1837 but Henry Talley's name does not appear." There was an older Henry Talley in the 1800 census who could be Henry's father. According to Doris Talley-Adams, Henry Talley (c1737) is thought to have gone to an estate settlement of John Wallace "in right of his wife". Henry's wife was expecting to receive something from the estate. She was most likely John's daughter. This means John Wallace is most likely Henry Talley's (1760/1762) grandfather; also that his mother was a Wallace. As you can see at this time, the names of his parents are just supposition. The Talley family is said to be from either France or Finland. Two Talley's that may have come to the U.S. were William and John.

41. Edith Hubbard was born on 3 Mar 1777 in NC. She married Henry Talley on 1 Dec 1795 in York District, SC. She married Francis Hopkins on 10 Aug 1837 in Newton County, GA. She died on 30 Jun 1861 in Newton County, GA, at age 84. She was buried in (Newton/Rockdale County?), GA. Many family members think Edith was part Cherokee. But I haven't seen any proof ot that. Also Kerri Pajute has some notes from a Bible that belonged to John William Talley. It said that Edith was part Cherokee Indian. However, Kerri says she doesn't have any proof of that. Census: 1800 York District, SC, page 970; 1810 York District, SC, page 275; 1820 York District, SC, page 157; 1830 Newton County, GA, page 19; 1840 Newton County, GA, page 42; 1850 Newton County, GA, page 517; 1860 Covington, Newton County, GA, page 581. Edith and Francis are in GA marriage records. They were married in 1837 and divorced in 1838. Records of the Church in Salem, Georgia, in a 1982 document list the membership of Edith Talley Hopkins and other members of the family as late as 1837. It is about 6 miles northeast of Conyers, Georgia on Highway 138.

42. Adam Southerland was born in 1800 in SC. He married Sarah (--?--) circa 1819. He died after 1850. Sutherlands in the counties of northeast Alabama in the 1830 census are A. L. S., Adam, Alfred D., Archibald, Evan, John, someone (unnamed) in John's household, William, and Wm (William) Sutherland. Sutherlands and Southerlands in 1840 are A., Adam, Alexander, Alfred, Evan, Frederick, Henry, John, William, and Wm (William). The ones in 1830 that had a girl of the right age are Adam, Alfred D., Archibald [20-30], Evan, and someone (unnamed) in John's household. The ones in 1840 are A., Adam, Alfred, and Evan. The father of Charlsey should be in both censuses. The children of Evan and Alfred are known, and Charlsey is not among them. A could stand for Archibald. So the father of Charlsey could be Archibald or Adam. Since Charlsey named a son Adam, I would guess her father's name was Adam. Adam Sutherland: 1830 St. Clair County, AL, page 234 - 1110010-2100010 (30-40 years old) [They had two girls born between 1825 and 1830]; Adam Southerland: 1840 Marshall County, AL, page 13 or 84 - 0202101-2111001 (40-50 years old). Adam Sutherland: 1850 Division 3, Tippah County, MS, page 555B; he is 50 born in SC; Sarah is 52 born in GA; Nancy 25, Lucinda 20, Howard 18, Polly 13, Sarah A.M. 11, and William B. 8, were born in AL. Sarah Sutherland is in 1860 Ouachita, Hot Spring County, AR, page 1002; she is 61 GA, with her are Sarah A. Sutherlan 20 AL, William 18 AL; Howard Sutherlan 27 AL is next door. Archibald: 1830 Blount County, AL, page 10 - 100010-10010 (20-30 years old). A. Sutherland: 1840 DeKalb County, AL, page - 110001-211001 (30-40 years old).

43. Sarah (--?--) was born in 1798 in GA. She married Adam Southerland, son of Alexander Southerland and Elizabeth Ann Crenshaw, circa 1819. She died after 1860. 1850 Tippah County, MS, page 555B Sarah is 52 born in GA; Nancy 25, Lucinda 20, Howard 18, Polly 13, Sarah A.M. 11, and William B. 8, were born in AL.
